Some Days the Bear Bites You………

16th November 2008
We all knew the day was going far too well. The car was ready; Warren was on time (!!), the Fruitwheels supplied Kenworth was loaded with an hour to spare and ready to go.
Arriving at the track, Warren and the Ferguson Autosports team were ready to do battle at what would be Round 1 for the Wanless World Series at PCR. The plan was qualify well and do it the “easy” way, well Warren must have needed a challenge as the Deco Glaze car qualified in 20th out of the 50 entries. “I made a mistake at the end of lap one and it slowed the momentum for my second lap”, said Warren unimpressed with himself. “Guess we’ll just have to do it the hard way”.
The heats were tough with big fields and a 10 invert. The Deco Glaze, Fruitwheels, Visual Impact, G&S number 32 quickly climbed to 4th and stayed there in the team’s first heat from position 6. It was a good result, another one like that and we’ll be through to the A main was the feeling.
Warren’s second heat wasn’t so grand, a lot of banging and stop starting from the front couple of rows caused a messy start which saw Warren dive to the bottom of turns one and two and into 4th place when a competitor who had run off the track turned hard left to get back on and straight into the side of the Deco Glaze 32 car which set of a chain reaction through the field taking out 4 cars and seeing Warren roll about 2-3 times. The bear had bitten and now the team now had a massive job ahead of them.
The hard working crew of Dwayne and Lisa Lawrence, Jason Newell, George Ferguson and Deco Glaze Director Jason Hedges (yes we made the sponsor work too!) all jumped in with Warren to fix the badly damaged car. Unfortunately with the DNF of the second heat we would only start the C-main from position 3 and gave very little time. In 35 minutes the team had reassembled the car and Warren was strapping in, just making it onto the track for the race. With no time to set the car up, all hoped it would still be fast. While it was OK, it was not good enough and the best Warren could finish was 5th in the 15-car field.
“The team did a heck of a job,” said Warren, “I cant believe we got this thing together. The determination from all of them was outstanding, I just wish I could have carried the car onto the B and then the A to really thank them.”
A busy two weeks in the work shop will see Warren and the Ferguson Autosports team return to PCR for Twin Features night on November 29th when we hope to shake the monkey off our back…..or at least keep the bear away!!
